Meet the Team

Tom and April moved to Brunswick Beach, located on the central eastern edge of Howe Sound, in January 2022. They instantly fell in love with the nature surrounding them and have been amazed at the marine life that continues to grow each year. Howe Sound Revival was created in June 2024 as a community-based project to conserve and protect the recovery of whales in Howe Sound. April is a British Columbia-born Biologist and Bioacoustican, and a MSc Candidate with Dr. Ruth Joy at Simon Fraser University. Tom is an American-born Photographer and Civil Engineer. All photography is taken in Howe Sound by Tom. The Howe Sound Revival logo was created by Tom and inspired by April’s research on Southern Resident killer whale echolocation clicks in the Salish Sea. The Howe Sound Revival logo depicts a single echolocation click that is visualized as a waveform, demonstrating the loudness of the click in a given time.

Our objective is to proactively protect whales in Howe Sound by alerting ships of their presence through acoustics. We also aim to create an acoustic baseline to monitor the revival of all marine life in Howe Sound.

After time spent at OrcaLab, BC Whales Fin Island Research Station and Saturna Island, I cannot help but wonder what marine life is present in Howe Sound that we do not visually detect?
